Over the years I’ve gotten better at not automatically ordering everything my favorite influencer recommends. I literally used to buy certain drinks at Starbucks or buy the same perfume if an influencer was like “this is my favorite, you have to try it!”. As time went on and influencer marketing became a business, things started to become less about recommending products because they liked them and more about marketing and advertising paid for by brands.. Either way, I don’t think any influencers I know would promote a product they didn’t like.
I want to start this series on my blog to start testing some of the things that I keep getting recommended by influencers. I’m starting off with a product I was most curious about: custom hair care. I’ve always used higher end shampoos/conditioners and the idea of getting a custom shampoo/conditioner made just for me in the same price point as my regular products seemed very appealing. So today we take on Prose.
Prose is defined on their website as “made for people. not hair types”. An interesting catch phrase that makes sense for what they are selling. I decided to purchase this product after Chelsey Jade Curtis was talking about it. She’s an “influencer” I think really highly of and because she’s kinda new to the influencing game I trust her opinion more. In addition, she is a full time health coach which adds credibility to her opinion on what works and doesn’t work. Other influencers like Aspyn Ovard have promoted Prose, but about a month later she also promoted another brand that was similar, so not sure what to believe.
The ordering process was what I expected. They asked questions about my hair type and what my hair goals were. For those who don’t know I have very very fine and thin hair that breaks really easily. A repercussion of that is that my hair is really flat and kind of life-less. So I told them my hair goals were less breakage, oil control and more volume. One piece on the quiz that I didn’t expect was the website taking into consideration where you live. Might just be a bunch of crap, but still cool.
Once I finished the quiz I was delighted to be given a surprise 20% off. Not sure if they just noticed I had taken the quiz like 10 times and still hadn’t purchased, but I was more excited with my purchase after getting $10 off and free shipping. The shipping notice said it would take between 5-7 business days to arrive. So now we wait.
My shipment arrived about a week and a half later (but it felt like sooo much longer). First of, wow, 10 points for packaging and for having the aesthetic I was wanting! I think I took more pictures of this box than I have my own dog…oops. As my dad said “wow it looks like fancy science bottles”. Yes, Dad, yes it does. Also, please take a moment to realize it says “fitness lover”, no need to wonder if I work out *wink*. Not gonna lie, when I pulled the caps off and smelled the products for the first time I was NOT a fan. It smelled super plastic-y and chemical smells. Wasn’t too excited about that.
Now let’s get onto the actual experience of using the product. I had been using Living Proof Full Shampoo and Conditioner and I didn’t feel like my hair showed any signs of being more full or really any difference when I started using that combination. But weirdly enough (and maybe it was in my head) I feel like Prose makes a really big difference on my hair after the first use! My hair felt light, airy and bouncy. The way I would describe it was that I could feel every piece of my hair move when I ran my fingers through it. Maybe that made no sense but either way my first experience was stellar! The smell of the product ended up being delightful once it got in my hair. It’s a perfect scent so when your hair blows in the wind, someone could smell your shampoo.
After using the set for over a month I’m still in love. My favorite part would have to be the fact that my hair felt 1000x more fresh second day than any other shampoo/conditioner I’ve ever used. I started dying my hair and unfortunately had to stop using the products but I 100% intend on ordering a color safe version of what I had before.
Do you want to try custom shampoo? Or are you already over the hype? I think it’s worth giving it a go next time you run out of what you’re already using.
